AM vs PM Skincare: What is the difference?

You may have seen skincare products labelled morning, night or overnight and wondered - Does the time of day matters really matter when using skincare? Fair question, afterall skin is skin. Why should you need one product at 8am and another at 11pm?

TL;DR

  • Your skin faces different conditions throughout the day

  • Morning routine helps prepare your skin for what is about to experience

  • Nighttime routine helps remove what has accumulated and supports the skin after a full day

Does this mean you need a full shelf of products?

No. Having two routines does not mean you need an entirely different bathroom shelf for each one. It simply means that the purpose of your routine changes depending on the time of day. Think of it like getting dressed - You probably would not wear pajamas to work. You could but your manager will definitely have questions. Your skincare should follow the same logic.

What should a Morning Routine do?

A morning skincare routine is to prepare your skin for what is ahead. Throughout the day, your skin is exposed to:

  • Sunlight

  • Heat and humidity

  • Sweat and excess oil

  • Dust and pollution

In Singapore, this can mean sweating on the way to the MRT before spending the next eight hours in an air-conditioned office.

Therefore, your morning routine should focus on two things: support and protection.

Keeping the skin hydrated helps it feel comfortable and supports the skin barrier, limiting the entry of irritants from the environment. Antioxidant ingredients such as Vitamin C and E also help support the skin against oxidative stress caused by factors such as UV exposure and pollution. Lastly, a broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect the skin from UVA and UVB radiation. Regular sunscreen use can help reduce sun damage, pigmentation and premature signs of aging.

A simple morning routine can be: Cleanse → Apply your Morning serum → Apply Sunscreen.

That is it. No complicated layering chart. No skincare mathematics before your first coffee.

What is a PM Skincare Routine for?

By nighttime, your skin has spent several hours collecting:

  • Sweat

  • Oil

  • Dust

  • Environmental particles

Therefore, your PM routine is about removing the buildup and replenishing your skin. Cleansing at night helps remove everything that has been accumulated throughout the day.

Water also naturally moves through the skin and evaporates into the surrounding air through a process called transepidermal water loss (you do not need to remember the name, there will not be a test later).

What matters is that skin barrier plays an important role in retaining moisture and applying hydrating and barrier-supporting ingredients at night can help restore comfort after cleansing.

A simple nighttime routine can be: Cleanse → Apply your PM products → Go to bed

Why not use the same product for Morning and Night?

Some ingredients can be used at either time but the benefits of separate AM and PM products is clarity.

A Morning routine can be designed to:

  • Provide lightweight hydration

  • Support the skin during daytime exposure

A Nighttime routine can be designed to:

  • Replenish moisture

  • Support the skin barrier after cleansing

  • Restore comfort at the end of the day

Morning Prepares. Night Resets.

You do not need a complicated routine to care for your skin properly. You only need to understand the purpose of each moment. That is the thinking behind RE2ET’s AM and PM approach. Two products, Two clear purposes. No guessing which one to use and hoping for the best.
